to who i choose to be

“to who i choose to be” is a self-portrait and safe space filled with personal memorabilia and memories. This piece depicts my autonomy to define self as a reflective and growing term, instead of how women are often defined: unilaterally, as the trauma they experience. 

The form of a blanket allows me to be physically surrounded by these identities, protecting and healing myself in the process. 

This has been an immensely important and beneficial piece of art for me to create, particularly within the context of our community and world. I hope this blanket can provide a similar form of protection, safety, and sanctuary to others. Caring for yourself and your community is an essential step in making change.
